Outstanding News 2022-12-29 Fertilizers Europe estimate on the evolution of agriculture and the sector (2022-2032)

The European Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers (Fertilizers Europe - FE) has recently published the document: "Forecast of food, farming and fertilizer use in the European Union 2022 - 2032", which includes estimates for the sector at a European level and in the long term. term and on the perspectives of nutrient consumption by crops and by countries. Below is a summary with some of the forecasts indicated by said Association:

• The average of the nutrients consumed in the European Union (EU) during the last three agricultural seasons (2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22) has been 9.8 million tons of N, 2.5 million tons of P2O5 and 2.8 million tons of K2O. This makes a total of 15.1 million tons of nutrients (N+P2O5+K2O).

• During the last three agricultural campaigns, the fertilizable area has been, on average, 123.8 million hectares of farmland, leaving 38.7 million hectares unfertilized.

• Regarding the fertilizable area (123.8 million hectares), arable crops have covered a total of 56 percent (32 percent are cereals, 7 percent oilseeds, and 8 percent forage crops), while permanent crops (woody) have represented 7 percent and grasslands 34 percent.

• Taking into account the economic prospects and the possible evolution of cultivated areas in Europe, FE forecasts for within 10 years (agricultural year 2031/32) a consumption of 9.5 million tons of N, 2.5 million tons of P2O5 and 2.8 million tons of K2O. This makes a total of 14.8 million tons of nutrients, a consumption 2 percent lower than the current one. It is estimated that by then the fertilizable area will be 123.9 million hectares.
